According to Forbes, 90% of organizations fail to stick to their strategies. In fact, many team members don’t know what their organization’s strategy even is.
Strategy helps you stay focused on the key initiatives that will allow you to be successful. If you don't have a strategy, your tendency will be to say yes to anything and consequently, you might lose in the process. You might go after hardscaping jobs because you see the big dollar signs as a chance to grow revenue, but you lost sight of the fact that you’ve never been able to profitably install a hardscape job in the past. It’s great that you sold a $30,000 job as long as it didn’t cost you $25,000 to produce it.
The first step to creating a strong strategy is articulating your company’s unique value proposition (UVP), or what your company does that makes you stand out among a crowded field of competition. To start, ask:
Why do your clients choose to do business with you over a competitor?
What can your team do better than any other company serving your market?
Your UVP is how your company can maximize success in your market by using your company’s strengths to your advantage. It will help you to define the type of work your company needs to do to maximize success in your market with the tools, equipment, and people you have. It’ll help your team stick to your strategy by clearly spelling out which jobs to take on and which to pass up.
We’ll help our attendees to create a well-defined strategy with specific goals and steps for maximizing their UVP and succeeding in 2021 during our next virtual event, Sticking with Strategy. I hope you'll join us.
