The best silver lining that has come out of the coronavirus pandemic has most definitely been the ubiquity of Zoom and other video call technology. Today everyone is using video calls to conduct business and stay connected to the people in their lives.

This presents a great opportunity for salespeople in the green industry: we can now do face-to-face sales calls without travel time and we can continue selling no matter what happens!

When conducting Zoom meetings with clients, it’s important to still be professional and put your best foot forward. The best practices that Grunder Landscaping Co. uses when speaking to clients over Zoom include:

  • Test your presentation beforehand, and be prepared to share designs and proposals on the screen so that you and the prospect can review the documents together. Try testing your presentation with a coworker, ideally with the coworker not at the office so you can also test the internet connection.

  • Choose a well-lit location for your meeting that has a nice background. We find the virtual backgrounds to be distracting, and try to opt for a tidy real background instead. To ensure your prospect can see you well, try facing a window or buy a ring light to place behind the camera.

  • Place your camera slightly above eye level, and we like to drag the video screen directly under it. This helps it appear that you’re looking your prospect in the eye. If using a laptop, try elevating it with a stand or anything you have on hand. Reams of paper, books, and shoeboxes work well.

  • Zoom and other platforms have an automatic retouching option that can help blur out the dark circles under your eyes come busy season. In Zoom, go to video settings and check the box next to "touch up my appearance" to turn this on.
