Well, folks, they've finally done it. My Cincinnati Bengals will play in the Super Bowl tonight for the first time in 33 years. My family will tell you that I am the definition of a long-suffering Bengals fan, taking up a TV to watch games every Sunday even when we only won two games in 2019. My Bengals have gone from the worst team in the NFL to a Super Bowl contender in just two seasons, and I think there's a lot to learn from their 2021 run:

Believe in Yourself and Your Team
Our quarterback Joe Burrow expressed his frustration at the Bengals being branded as the underdog after the team's win against Tennessee. The locker room and the fans back home knew something others hadn't realized yet: The Bengals had something special. Tuning out the naysayers and being confident in their abilities was key to them making it this far.

With your own team, listen to your trusted advisors, put your faith in your team, and execute your plans. It's amazing what is possible with just a bit of self-confidence. Believe in yourself, one another, and your team!

Train in Real-World Conditions
Before the Bengals went to Kansas City to take on the Chiefs, they practiced outside in low temperatures and with the speakers at Paul Brown Stadium blaring crowd noise so loud that security was apologizing to the neighbors. The team simulated what playing in the actual game would be like, so they were ready when they arrived.

With your team, is your training on real-world applications? Are you helping them prepare for the conditions and situations they'll come across on job sites and in their role? While some theoretical training is helpful, I believe hands-on training is the most effective. It's why we always include a company tour in our plans for the GROW! Annual Conference

The "It" Factor Makes All the Difference
What really propelled this team to the top of the league this year was their chemistry. They're supportive, they cheer each other on, and they move on quickly when there's a mistake or a bad play. Joe Burrow was sacked 9 times against the Titans, and we didn't see him yelling at his teammates for it after. We saw him get up, dust himself off, and move on to the next play. The team doesn't bad mouth each other, the organization, or the referees. They focus on what they can control - themselves!

Your company culture is that "It" factor, and having a constructive way to manage challenges separates good from great companies. Focus on finding solutions and moving forward over dwelling on who is to blame.

I'll be spending the morning today putting the finishing touches on my talks for GROW! 2022, which if you haven't signed up for yet you should head to our website and do now. You won't want to miss joining us on February 23-25, 2022. Then I'll put on my C.J. Uzomah jersey, settle into my favorite chair, turn on the TV, and watch my Bengals play their final game of the season.

P.S. While this was originally published before the game, I'm still proud of my Bengals and all that they accomplished this year. Here's to another great season next year!
